Cross Training
In sports and athletics, it is vital to not only study the best techniques and strategies for optimal, physical performance, but to actually train, practice, and develop the skills required to obtain it. It is the difference between drawing up plays on a whiteboard and putting on the pads to run them at full speed.
In many ways, our faith is the same, in that simply knowing what to do or the right answer is different than skillfully and confidently living it out. Our modern spiritual development is highly focused on study or learning, whether it be personal devotions, group Bible Studies, or Sunday sermons, they all help us much more in the “knowing” than the actual practice or “doing”.
This is where Cross Training comes in, pun intended, providing a simple, flexible, and novel way to help groups of believers truly train together spiritually. In sports and athletics, the key to success often comes down to how well you execute the most fundamental skills. In Cross Training, we have a similar focus, covering six “faith fundamentals” that believers can train and grow in, including:
The Gospel – Embracing The Good News
Prayer – Profound Chats With God
Biblical Study – Engaging With God’s Word
Relationships & Community – Loving God & Others
Gifts & Stewardship – Generous & Skillful Service
Outreach & Evangelism – Sharing Jesus In Word & Deed
Specifically, this book contains 300 group exercises, spread across these six topics, to help you and those in your community to mature in Christian faith & practice. These spiritual exercises are meant to provide people leading Small Groups, Bible Studies, Camps/Retreats, and other group-based discipleship initiatives, effective ways to “practice faith” together, beyond the traditional intellectual approaches.
You are invited to become not just a hearer of the word, but also a doer. To skillfully master, by the grace of God, these spiritual disciplines, helping to bring life, hope, and healing to a broken world. So, start your training today!
Warning: These exercises may cause discomfort and challenge you intellectually, emotionally, and relationally, but be encouraged, as this is where growth happens.
